Five Things Saving Me Right Now

A.S. Thorne

Some weeks feel like survival. Some feel like momentum.
This week? Somewhere in between.
So today, I’m keeping it simple:
Here are five things getting me through right now.

1. A comfort thing.
Ice cream. Any kind, really, as long as it’s Blue Bell. But lately? Groom’s Cake has been my go-to. That said, Moo-linium Crunch will always hold the number one spot in my heart. There’s just something about opening the freezer and knowing a scoop of comfort is waiting.

2. A grounding ritual.
A scalding hot shower – first thing in the morning or last thing at night. I think of it as a cleansing ritual, a way to wash off the bullshit of the day – the stress, the self-doubt, the mental noise. Whether it’s the beginning of something or the end of something, it resets me. And let’s be honest: nothing beats the feeling of freshly shaved legs against clean sheets and a moment alone to cry if I need to.

3. A little joy.
Iced coffee. Every. Single. Day. Texas heat demands it. Sanity depends on it. End of story.
Seriously – don’t expect much out of me before coffee. Literally favorite saying: “But first, coffee.”

4. A whole lotta love.
My husband. His support, patience, and unfailing ability to put up with my shenanigans is honestly saint-level. He listens, shows up, and somehow knows when to step in and when to just sit beside me. And of course, my two chaotic, overly dramatic, slightly-possessed dogs- who always know when I need a laugh, a nudge, or just a reminder that I’m loved exactly as I am.

5. A personal win.
Survival. Duh.
But also? I got this post written. I got something down on the page. I knocked out a quiz before the deadline and crossed a few things off my never-ending list. Some days, the little wins are what hold everything together.

It’s not revolutionary. But it’s enough to keep me going.

I wear a lot of hats—new writer, grad student, program director at a rape crisis center.
Some days it feels like I’m holding a thousand things in the air.
But this? This list? These little moments?
They’re holding me too.
